‘Spring, Echo, Distort’ is the first full release from Dust Palace, featuring three classic drum machines sampled through six analogue effects units.

To call DP001 a sample pack doesn’t tell the full story; this is a series of instruments designed to take well known drum sounds to entirely new places. We all know what an 808 sounds like, but what happens when you run it through a real spring reverb? What about a real analogue tape echo? How does a tuned 808 kick respond when you run it through the pre amp of a 70’s PA desk?

We sampled each drum machine at Soundgas in the UK, utilising their in-house Calrec console. Once we had selected the voices for each kit, we then spent days sampling each hit through our collection of analogue effects units, coming back in to Ableton through Neve 1073 pre-amps. Capturing each effects unit at four stages of input gain, from 25% to 100% wet/dry balance, we ended up with 1,080 unique drum samples.

Creating Ableton Live 10 presets for each kit was the next step, arranging the samples in an intuitive manner based around our custom FX Rack macro controls. To top it off we asked three of our professional touring drummer friends, Adam Marcello (Katy Perry), Andrew Marshall (Billie Eilish) and Gunnar Olsen (Bruce Springsteen) to each create a series of loops and presets, with a total of 180 loops covering each of the three drum machines. ‘Spring, Echo, Distort’ is a unique collection of sounds, ready for use in your next production or in your next live show.
